Shabana Azmi

Shabana Azmi is an Indian film and theatre actress. After making her film debut in Shyam Benegal’s ‘Ankur’ in 1974, she became a leading lady of parallel cinema. Hailed as a phenomenal actress by audiences and critics alike, Azmi has been awarded the National Film Award for Best actress for a record of 5 times.

Azmi was born to Kaifi Azmi (an Indian poet) and Shaukat Azmi (a veteran Indian People's Theatre Association stage actress), both of whom were members of the Communist Party of India. Her brother, Baba Azmi, is a cinematographer, and her sister-in-law, Tanvi Azmi, is also an actress. Due to her parents’ active social life, she grew up in an environment of intellectual stimulation and knowledge seeking. Jaya Bachchan’s (then, Bhaduri) performance in Suman inspired her to become an actress.

During her career, she has been part of several critically and/or commercially successful films like Masoom, Thodisi Bewafaai, Mandi, Swami, Makdee, Neerja, etc.

She is the wife of Javed Akhtar, a lyricist, poet and Bollywood scriptwriter. She is the stepmother of Farhan Akhtar, a Bollywood actor and Director, and Zoya Akhtar, another Bollywood director. She is the aunt of the talented Bollywood actress, Tabu.
